Behind the Scenes with Kevin Gutwein

Introducing Kevin Gutwein, a financial advisor out of Zionsville that will be speaking on our August brunch panel! Before we get a chance to hear from him then, check out a behind the scenes interview with him below!

What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

Our team (Westpoint Private Client Group) works with business owners and executives to craft and implement a strategy to reach their business and personal financial goals.  I think what makes us different is that we truly focus and spend time on not only the value of what you own, but what you value.

What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

See attached bio.

What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

Probably working with a client (he was my Jr High basketball coach and the bank President in my hometown) and his wife as he was dying from cancer last year.  I worked to help them make sense of the finances and create enough income so that she won’t have to worry about money in addition to all the other things she has had to deal with.

What is one thing people do not know about you?

I don’t turn the station when a Colbie Caillat song comes on, even if my teenagers complain (I know, kind of embarrassing).

If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

It may sound trite, but I am seriously doing my dream job.  I guess maybe I would be… no, I can’t think of anything that is better than what I’m doing.

Come hear from Kevin on August 16th at Hilton Indianapolis for our brunch!

Behind the Scenes with Steve Shoultz

What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

We sell insurance for auto, home, life and business.  However, insurance is BORING and no one wants to talk about that.  Insurance is about coverage, limits, claims, etc.  Nothing fun!  But I get excited when a client has a serious car accident and his kids can still go to college.  Or, when a business has $50,000 stolen by an employee and I have prevented from filing bankruptcy.  This allows me to get going every morning.  I have become a part of my customers lives because I have helped them through a tough situation.  What our customers tell us is they feel secure because they understand their situation better and them make better decisions.

What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

I have been an insurance agent for 35 years because when I graduated college in 1982 they company that would hire me was an insurance company.  However, now I love all the people I meet and the things I learn!

What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

My most memorable event happened on a Friday of Memorial Day weekend.  My clients warehouse was struck by lightning and burned to the ground destroying everything inside.  Including, all the air conditioners my client had purchased for the summer season.  I received a call at approximately 10:30 pm and my customer was frantic.  He said he would have to file bankruptcy if the loss was not covered.  Why was he worried?  Because in order to save on his insurance premium, he had not listed the location or it’s contents on his policy.  After all, the air conditioners were only to be there for 30-45 days.  He knew there was no coverage for this location.  To make a long story short, I convinced the claims manger to pay the loss!  How can you not be jazzed after a story like that!

What is one thing people do not know about you?

At the top of my bucket list is to attend the UNC vs Duke basketball games at both universities.

If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

If I were not in insurance I would love to have been an inventor that became independently wealthy so that I could help less fortunate people.

Come meet Steve on August 16th brunch at Hilton Indianapolis Hotel & Suites!

Behind the Scenes with Andrea Panico from The Tinker House

Introducing , Andrea Panico from The Tinker House. Join us at The Tinker House July 19th for the ILEA Indiana Kick off luncheon

  1. What is your title and position at your current company? I am co-owner and operator of The Tinker House Events. In addition, I serve as the Director of Development at Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery. Tinker House Events is a sister company of Hotel Tango.

  1.      What does your company do? How is it different than others like it? The Tinker House Events is an event venue with planning services available. We set ourselves apart thus far by bringing in myriad of local craftsmen and women to execute many of the custom elements found in our facility. From the windows and doors to the intricate light installations, we very much enjoy shedding light (no pun intended) on the amazing work of local artisans! As well, we aim to work with a vast spectrum of other local vendors for the execution of events - not only to share business throughout our community, but to create a wide range of options for our clients in planning their perfect event.

  1.      How many years have you been in the industry? While I have over ten years of restaurant and bar experience, it wasn’t until beginning work at Hotel Tango three years ago that I got my first taste of the events industry a year in to my career with the company. While just a fledging in this realm, I feel that my background in fine art helps me to lend a fresh and creative perspective to the world of events.

  1.      What was your very first job? My first “real job” coming out of college happened very organically at Hotel Tango Artisan Distillery. I started as a bartender in 2014 after graduating from The Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI.  Very quickly, my natural leadership skills emerged and I was promoted into a management role.  Shortly thereafter, Hotel Tango had a need for an Events Director to manage the daily event inquiries that were pouring in.  Without hesitation and with an eagerness to learn the field from within, I took on the task. I feel lucky to work for an amazing group of young entrepreneurs who saw something in me and very much wanted me to succeed alongside them. They assisted my professional growth by nurturing my strengths and trusting me to help lead the direction of their young enterprise.

  1.      What lead you in into the event industry? See above - it was a bit of a happy accident! That being said, while I may not have known that the event industry would be something I would enjoy, it actually appeals to many of my strengths; I am able to work with and lead others and it provides me a broad outlet for tapping in to my inherently creative nature.

  1.      Why did you decide to join ILEA? Accent Indy hosted an event at Hotel Tango, which is how I came to learn about ILEA.  I immediately realized the importance of joining a network of other event professionals. ILEA is an amazing platform that has helped me to build strong connections with other event professionals in my city and beyond, which is especially important to us at both Tinker and Tango as the "new kids on the block".

  1.      What is your most memorable event? Why? While that is yet to be seen for The Tinker House, I recently attended the ILEA PACE awards at the public library and was blown away! The attention to detail (very important to me) was just perfection.

  1.      What’s one thing most people don’t know about you? I am a certified notary!

  1.      If you were not in the event industry, what would be your dream job? My dream is to own a touring circus featuring only Pomeranians! At the end of every show I would be lowered from the rafters on a swing ornately covered in feathers into a giant martini glass where I would sing Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’!”

Come meet Andrea on July 19th at The Tinker House!
