Behind the Scenes with Julia Spangler- Sustainable Events Consultant

Behind the Scenes with Julia Spangler, Sustainable Events Consultant

Julia has worked on corporate events since 2011 as an award-winning designer and support staff. Her experience runs the gamut from multi-day customer appreciation events to educational seminars to luncheons and parties. In 2014, 2015 and 2016, her design suites for Baldwin & Lyons Race Weekend won Best Marketing Design in their budget category at the ISES (International Special Events Society) Indiana Chapter PACE Awards.

She also serves as Editor in Chief of Fair for All Guide, a blog focused on the pursuit of a connected and responsible life. Fair for All covers fair trade, ethical shopping, sustainable living and more, with a focus on providing realistic, practical lifestyle tips.

Enjoy a little sneak peak from Julia:

  • What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

I help companies and organizations identify practical ways to reduce the environmental footprint of their events. As far as I know there is not another company in Indiana offering this type of guidance specifically for the event industry.

  • What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

My work as event support staff came as part of a role at Baldwin & Lyons that is primarily graphic design, which is the field I studied in college. Working on events was new to me, but I came to love it! Through this experience I also realized that there are lots of opportunities to reduce waste and energy usage during an event, and that some companies may need help putting sustainable ideas into practice.

  • What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

I recently helped green a "Slow Fashion Trunk Show" at a pop-up shop in Circle Centre Mall. The mall setting posed an interesting challenge; however, we were able to implement composting for food waste, and our focus on sustainability tied in perfectly with the content of the event, which was a discussion about the environmental and social impacts of the fashion industry.

  • What is one thing people do not know about you?

I moonlight as a banjo and guitar player in a bluegrass/folk band.

  • If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

I've always thought it would be fun to be in a wedding band—but that would still be the event industry!

Come meet Julia at our August Luncheon on August 31, 2016 at 11:30 AM at Ruth's Chris Steak House. Hope to see you there!

Behind the Scenes with Barb Harris with On the Scene

Senior Program Manager, On the Scene

Standing 6' tall with a personaility to match, Barb Harris, CSEP, DMCP is an award winning bundle of energy in the events community. She is the Senior Program Manager at On The Scene- The Event Company, a Chicago-based DMC and international event management company. Barb is excited to be the incoming RVP for the ILEA Midwest Chapters after serving the Greater Chicago Chapter on their Board of Directors for 6 years.

She credits her childhood babysitter for getting her first planning job, proving opportunities come from relationships of all kinds. With a resume dabbling in hotels, resorts, and decor rentals, she has spent the majority of the last 11 years as an event planner for corporate clientele. Barb has been honored by Illinois Meeting & Events Magazine in their Hall of Fame as "Best Special Event Planner", and credits this entirely to those around her who make the vision come to life.

Enjoy a little sneak peek from Barb Harris:

1.     What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

On The Scene – The Event Company is a national event and destination management company known for our creativity, design and execution.  We work closely with each client to understand their ideas and visions, incorporate trends, and create the total experience from start to finish. Our team loves a challenge and thrives on the unexpected!

2.       What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

Specifically, a freshman year college course unofficially titled “Find Your Major” which directed me to Tourism at Indiana University.  When my fleeting dream of being a cruise ship director never left the dock, my childhood babysitter gave me my first temp job as a planner, and a month later, I was hired full time, and on the journey.  11 years later, loving it more each day!

3.       What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

In 2014, my team and I produced a series of events in Copenhagen, Denmark.  It was the first time I had worked in Europe, and it was incredibly challenging to pull it all together.  In the end, we enlisted vendors from 6 countries, worked in 4 different currencies, hired translators, and did a lot of DIY styling from IKEA!  But the it was one of the most special experiences because we overcame so many obstacles.  It was truly awesome.

4.       What is one thing people do not know about you?

I am something like 14th generation American.  My family has ancestors that came over in the 1600’s, including one poor woman who didn’t fare well at the Salem Witch Trials!

5.       If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

Either a collaborator on Saturday Night Live, or a travel writer.

 6.  Anything else you would like us readers to know about you?

I can cite joining ILEA as the single-most defining decision I’ve made in my career, and I credit the majority of my successes to my involvement.  It is so much bigger than networking in your own city – you have a family all around the globe who’s passions and goals are the same as your own; how special is that?  I will ALWAYS share my story, and find a way to help a fellow member if I can!

Come meet Barb at our 2016-2017 ILEA Indiana Kick Off Luncheon on July, 20, 2016 at 11:30 AM at Balmoral House.  Hope to see you there!
