Behind the Scenes with Susie Townsend

Introducing one of the speakers for our September lunch, Susie Townsend! Check out what she had to say in this behind the scenes interview.

What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

I work for Visit Indy, a convention and visitors bureau. We market the city as a destination for trade shows, meetings and events. So last week if you couldn’t get a dinner reservation, or wondered why all of those Storm troopers, aliens, and zombies were hanging out  downtown, it is because Visit Indy spent many years soliciting and booking the largest table top game convention in North America to move their event to Indy.

What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

I have been in the hospitality industry my entire working life, starting as a hostess in a restaurant, then moving to the Hyatt Hotel and then to Visit Indy. I have worked at Visit Indy for 28 years.

What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

I have had the opportunity to work on many great events and be a part of many complex projects. My most memorable event: When I was a young catering manager at the Hyatt I had the opportunity to plan a wedding. The wedding was over 30 years ago and I can clearly remember every detail of the event, the mother of the bride knew exactly what she wanted and expected flawless execution. It was accomplished. No detail was overlooked- interested in hearing more? My most memorable project was being a loaned executive on the Super Bowl Host Committee. My team was responsible for hotel welcome (at 144 hotels) , Super Service- training 20,000 employees, and volunteers, Super Celebration sites – 21 city’s around Indiana welcomed visitors with custom branded Indy race cars and so much more.

What is one thing people do not know about you?

When I graduated from college I had a job working at Macy’s in  Kansas City as a trainee and I quit before I started and went to work as a waitress in a restaurant. At the time my parents were not very happy with my decision, however it all turned out well.

If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

I would be a teacher for sure.

Come meet Susie and the rest of our speakers on September 20th at the Omni Severin Hotel!
