Thank you to all who attended our June monthly luncheon last week! We would also like to thank our host, Fleming's Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar, for providing us with a wonderful venue and a very scrumptious lunch.  It was a wonderful event filled with great networking among ILEA members, guests and more importantly, friends. The etiquette program we learned from Sandra Monahan was very informative and helpful to us event industry professionals in attendance.  She talked a lot about how to act and does and dont's while in a professional setting, like a lunch or dinner.  She also talked about handshakes and the proper to shake a person's hand, and what to do if someone refuses your hand.  Very good information to know! Sandra also offered any member of our ILEA Chapter her complimentary services for answering any etiquette question in the future by email or phone.  What a wonderful way to help our chapter members grow and thrive professionally!  At the end of the event every guest also received a gift from Sandra - a thank you card to use with a note saying "Saying thank you in written form will take you to the top."

  •  What is your title and position at your current company?

  • What does your company do? How is it different than others like it? 

Eventfull Planning is a full-service event planning and management company.  We focus on coordinating events with style.  We are experienced, organized, detail oriented, and imaginative.  Our portfolio includes weddings, social, corporate, and non-profit events.  Our passion is working with clients to create memorable events that reflect the clients' personal taste and style - making each event truly unique.

  • How many years have you been in the industry? 

I have worked with events, in various industries, for over 15 years.

  • What was your very first job? 

First job ever? Lifeguard.  First job in the industry?  Special Events Coordinator for a micro-brewery.

  • What lead you in into the event industry? 

Jennifer Lopez in the movie The Wedding Planner.

  • Why did you decide to join ILEA?

After relocating from Washington DC, I knew that joining ISES would be a great way to become connected and involved in the Indianapolis event community.

  • What are you looking to gain out of our ISES membership and how can we help you achieve that?

I am always looking to build new relationships and strengthen existing relationships in the events industry.  It has been a true pleasure to be on the board for the past three years and an honor to be VP of Programs/Education this year.

  • What is your most memorable event? Why? 

Planning a wedding from scratch in four weeks.  It was a destination wedding in Puerto Rico.  The bride and groom were in NY.  Her family was in DC.  I was in Indy AND there was a hurricane.  It was a crazy experience!  It makes for a good story.

  • What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I auditioned for and was accepted into one of the top ten college dance programs in the country (at Ohio University).

 

 

  • If you were not in the event industry, what would be your dream job? 

I loved working for Gucci and would go back to working in fashion.  If I win the lottery, I think I would do well as a socialite/philanthropist.  If they ever film the Real Housewives of Indy, I am ready!

Behind the Scenes with Sandra Monahan with Weddings Without Worries

 

Master Bridal Consultant; Life-Cycle Celebrate; and Etiquette Consultant and Educator, Weddings Without Worries

Sandra M. Monahan, Founder and President of Weddings Without Worries, Wexford, PA, is a Master Wedding Planner and senior member of the Association of Bridal Consultants having served as their State Coordinator/Manager for 12 years. She is currently the ABC/Penn Foster Career School Adjunct Instructor in the Certified Wedding Planner Certificate Course and Liaison for ABC.

Encompassing the business portfolio is Etiquette Education for business professionals; social/dining skills for adults, teens and children and Celebrant services. An Affiliate Partner with Etiquette Survival LLC, Sandra has presented several seminars for the ABC Annual Business of Brides conference and is the developer and facilitator of the ABC Educational Series seminar “Networking and Etiquette Revival” and creator of Business Etiquette for ABC Professional Wedding Planner Program. Her work is also a part of the Celebrant Foundation & Institute Academic Library for Celebrants in training. She studied etiquette at the School of Etiquette and Protocol under the direction of Nancy Courtney, Sewickley PA, and with etiquette consultant Bridget Wdeen, Pittsburgh PA. 

As a Master Life-Cycle Celebrant® through Celebrant Foundation & Institute, the mainstay of the services includes creating and officiating personalized wedding ceremonies with certifications as a ceremonialist for life’s rites of passage. She serves as Co-Facilitator for the foundation’s PA/DE Alumni Chapter and is the Program Director for the Master Life Celebrant Program.

Sandra has been acknowledged by author Sue Fox for her work in “Wedding Etiquette for Dummies” and her educational articles have appeared in Spirituality and Health Newsletter; Wedding Planner Magazine and various local Pittsburgh PA area newspapers.

Past experience in the floral design business, combined with sales and marketing opportunities in newspaper advertising and human services, have fashioned the foundation of essential skills for a successful wedding industry career  

Enjoy a little sneak peek from Sandra Monahan:

1.     What does your company do and what makes is different than others like it?

My company, Weddings Without Worries, was established in 1998 while I was working a full time position in newspaper advertising.   My clients have available to them wedding consulting and planning, ceremony officiating and etiquette education. I can honestly say that I feel the business is different from others because of the blending of the experience to enhance any of the categories.  It’s wonderful to arrive at a venue and know how to handle all aspects no matter what I will be doing for my couples. 

2.       What lead you to your current career and how long have you been in the field?

I started in the floral industry several years ago because I loved having my own business and being at home to raise my children. Due to the major economic decline of my husband’s career, I began working full time in newspaper advertising that lasted for 16 years. I knew in my heart it was not the career I wanted and began thinking of other avenues to research. With luck I came across becoming a bridal consultant and moved forward with intense dedication to build the business and continue my education in the wedding industry. Overall my work in the field totals approximately 25 years. Perhaps I’m just a romantic at heart!

3.       What is your most memorable event/project? Why?

To pinpoint one memorable event or project would be a difficult task. Becoming a Master Wedding Planner with the Association of Bridal Consultants; Receiving certification as a Life-Cycle Celebrant and then Master Life-Cycle Celebrant with Celebrant Foundation (I guess you can say I like the title “Master”), and adding Etiquette Education to my resume have all been significant wonderful events. These specific events took me to the level of achievement I wanted to reach in three of my favorite subjects. I always found so much satisfaction in every wedding, ceremony and etiquette training knowing I have been able to share knowledge and help those for their special day or career goals.  

4.       What is one thing people do not know about you?

I’ve always felt I represent exactly who and what I am by my actions and willingness to help anyone achieve their path in the event planning business. Mentoring others surrounds me all the time. I’m a very happy person, I enjoy life every day (as much as my schedule allows). At one time I wanted to be a French teacher, and love being a “leader” in unique instances when the opportunity is at hand.

5.       If you were not in your current career, what would be your dream job?

WOW!  This is a difficult question because I really love what I am doing at this time. However, I might move toward something in acting, being a TV anchor or announcer (not the weather), corporate CEO, or just plain teaching the knowledge I have gained over the past years in the wedding and etiquette industry. 

6.  Anything else you would like us readers to know about you?

I am completely honored to be presenting one of my favorite subjects to ILEA Indiana and want to thank the association team for all of their fabulous help with the planning. My dedication to this subject is very near and dear to me. Kindness and good manners are a part of my day to day activities and a huge part of the success that has come my way!
