Meet Jessica Strickland!

Crystal Grave Founder of Snappening.comWhat is your title and position at your current company?

Owner, head photographer, editor, blogger, accountant, business manager, stay awake all night until the job is done girl! ;) (maybe I should be more serious? feel free to make my answers more appropriate! ha!)

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it?

We do modern, fun and exciting photography with a timeless nature. We are different than most photographers for a variety of reasons. The first is that we work hard to create images to have a bright, vibrant nature while simultaneously working to reflecting our clients personality and evoking emotion through our images. We want them to relive the event, be excited about their images and feel the emotion and the joy that they did on their wedding day when they see them. The second is that we work closely with our clients and build a lasting relationship with them, truly getting to know them as friends. This allows them to feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera and allows our business to be very personally based. Our customer service is extremely important to us and we work with our clients for many years after their wedding, so putting emphasis on building a relationship is a critical aspect of what we do. The third is that FUN is also a big priority to us because couples, wedding parties and families spend a lot of their day with their photographer, so it's important for that time to be memorable, fun and something that was a great part of their wedding story as a whole. Their images are also more natural and real when they are truly enjoying themselves....everyone prefers a real candid over a formal serious shot anyway! The fourth is that we work closely to preplan their entire day with them, specifically and thoughtfully. We build their timeline hour by hour, ensuring that all of their preferences are considered and all key players have a clear idea of where to be and at what time. This allows for the couple to have lots of input on how their day plays out, how their timing will go and give everyone peace of mind. It also ensures that time is used efficiently, eliminates wasted time and confusion...and allows to make time for FUN! Lastly, we do not have time limits on our coverage, as most photographers do. It is very important to us to document every aspect of the day as best as we possibly can, whether it's the morning prep moments with friends and family or it's the final moments of the day when the energy is high and the celebration is in full swing...or any moment and detail in between. We could never leave a wedding before something important happened, documenting the day fully is part of our extensive customer service experience and our desire to build a relationship with our clients, versus just be a photographer on the clock. We love our clients, we want to experience their day with them and document it as best we can, so they can relive it in it's entirety for years to come!

How many years have you been in the industry?

I began photographing weddings in 2001 and have photographed over 600 weddings over the course of 13 years.

What was your very first job?

Photographing high school seniors for Wilbur Tague Photography right of out college, while beginning my wedding career. Churning out 25 senior portrait shoots over the course of one day definitely taught me a lot about how to handle the intense nature of a 15 hour wedding day! ;)

Snappening.com   What lead you in into the event industry?

Photography did, really. I actually *insert cringe* swore that I would never be a "wedding photographer". That was about 14 years ago when weddings were still very traditional in terms of photography and my style was similar to what it is today and I didn't think that would fly with weddings. Therefore, I intended on going into fashion photography but after an internship with a commercial photography company and not having a lot of creative freedom in my work, I realized that I didn't love it quite as much as I expected. I was shooting weddings and portraits for friends in the meantime and I was loving it, I got to be with happy people during great times and get to have creative freedom over my style of work at the same time. Thankfully, my style of work was accepted in weddings....and so I was sold. I've never looked back and I love my job more every day!

Why did you decide to join ISES?  I've been giving people images for years to use to win Pace awards...and one day, not too long ago, someone asked me "why don't you join ISES and get credit for your images and any Pace wins?" and I realized that I should have done it years ago. I also appreciate all that ISES does and the incredible networking and relationship opportunities within it.

What is your most memorable event? Why?

The 4-5 day Indian weddings are typically very memorable. I've done lots and still every time, I'm simply blown away at the scale of it all! The number of guests, the days of planning, the elaborate decor, the family and friends that come from all over the world and are all soo committed to surrounding this couple as they marry, the color, the outfits, the number of pictures (ha!), the amounts of food and drink, the sacredness of it all, the number of events that can be put into one day, it's all really impressive to watch unfold and be a integral part of.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I'm colorblind ;)

If you were not in the events industry, what would be your dream job?

I really am doing my dream job! If I HAD to choose....I would be an architect or a modern interior designer.

Meet Brady Miller!

Crystal Grave Founder of Snappening.comWhat is your title and position at your current company?

I am the Director of Special and Academic Events for Indiana University. In short, I manage a variety of special events and ceremonies for the President of IU and the Provost of IU Bloomington.

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it?

With more than 115,000 students across eight campuses, IU is one of the largest universities in the country. We are the state's fifth largest employer with more than 21,000 employees and operate with an annual budget of approximately $3 billion.

How many years have you been in the industry?

Eleven – two for a nonprofit community arts center and about nine in academe.

What was your very first job?

I was the Program and Marketing Director for the Manhattan Arts Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

Snappening.com   What lead you in into the event industry?

I was very involved in theater and music growing up, and when I majored in journalism in college, it was a nice fit to be able to land a job as a marketing director for the community arts center once I graduated. While I did the promotions and publicity for the center, I always was in charge of renting out the facility to outside groups, working with volunteers on things like our art galleries (and the openings), helping put together fundraisers, and working a variety of other special events. I enjoyed the events part of my job so much that when a full-time job in events opened up at the Kansas State University Foundation in 2005, I applied for that and moved into doing events full time.

Why did you decide to join ISES?

The biggest reason would be for the networking. When I lived in New Albany, it was more difficult to connect with everyone in ISES Indiana, and for obvious reasons, many of my larger vendors were out of Louisville. Now that I have moved to Bloomington, however, I am glad that I have been able to attend more events in Indy and plan on attending more in the future. I stage events in Indianapolis, Bloomington, and throughout the state, so developing a good network of people In Indy with whom to work with is something I would definitely like to establish.

What is your most memorable event? Why?

One would probably expect I would say it would be one of the larger events I’ve done – things like opening or closing fundraising campaigns replete with celebrity performances and big, spectacular, performance value – but that’s not true. The event that I hold most dear to my heart cost around $11,000 and involved planning 70 trees in one day on the campus of Indiana University Southeast as part of celebrating its 70th anniversary. I say this because not only was it a wonderful and beautiful campus beautification project with results that will benefit that campus community in perpetuity, but because a large part of that event was coordinated by a senior student intern who was working for me at the time. I had given her large and relatively complicated components of the event to handle on her own as part of her preparation for the “real world” when she graduated in May, including recruiting and organizing 70 different groups of faculty, staff, students, elected officials, and community members to all come out that day and help plant a tree as part of the community project. When you plan large events in the education field that normally have lot of VIP attendees, it can be easy to forget why you’re REALLY there in the first place: to benefit the University’s students. I never want to forget that. In the months, weeks, and days leading up to that event, she – a first-generation college student – proved that she had truly learned from her intern experience, and for me, the accomplishment that I feel when I know I’ve impacted someone else through education far outweighs any spectacle produced with pyrotechnics, confetti, or kabuki drops. Having students like her help remind me WHY I work for an educational institution and is what keeps me coming to work every day feeling as though what I’m doing has a true and honorable purpose.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

In the ISES Indiana crowd, most people probably don’t know I am originally from Kansas. I moved to Indiana in January 2009 to take a position at Indiana University Southeast.

If you were not in the events industry, what would be your dream job?

A full-time blogger and/or vlogger.

I imagine most people are familiar with IU, but if you want to get to know me better personally, you can find me on Twitter. I do post quite a bit about what I’m up to at work.
