Meet Crystal Grave

Crystal Grave Founder of Snappening.comWhat is your title and position at your current company?

I am founder, President & CEO of Snappening.com

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it?

Snappening is an online event planning search engine. You can read about how we got our start here. We pride ourselves on being the most comprehensive listing service for event venues and event planners.  We update our database daily with new records, delete old records and modify industry records with changing names, personnel or scope.   Snappening.com

How many years have you been in the industry?

I have been involved with planning events for about 15 years.  I have been involved full-time in the event planning industry since 2010 when I started developing Snappening.com more readily.
What was your very first job?

Oh, boy. Well, my very first job was as a cake decorator’s assistant.  (Translate: I liked to watch her make the pretty cakes as a child and she allowed me to hang out in the shop and lick as much icing as I wanted.)  After that I had a long line of memorable jobs such as: babysitter, mosquito control technician (yes, I’m not joking), warehouse cashier, food service front line staffer, math tutor, athletic trainer, etc.  It was in college when I first started getting more serious about marketing, events and promotions.  So from about 19 on, I was hooked and I have been in the biz ever since.

Snappening.com   What lead you in into the event industry?

I loved planning events, parties, meeting and celebrations.  Even at age 4, I had to plan just the “right” tea party.  I had to throw my own surprise birthday party because I couldn’t convince my parents to do it for me. (Note to self, 8 year olds are not as clever as they think.) I planned all sorts of activities in school and in college and eventually knew that I wanted to make that passion for making fun things happen and reaching new people into a career.  So I did.

Why did you decide to join ISES? Well, when I was in my research phase for

Snappening.com, I knew I wanted to become part of trade groups that represented to height of the industry.  So ISES just clearly stood out as one of these groups.  I met with the president at that time and I started my plans to get involved right away.

What is your most memorable event? Why?

Oh, this is hard.  There have been many. I think my favorite event so far has been the Prom PACE awards. That was my very first one so I was very new, didn’t know hardly anyone and had to meet a lot of people for the first time.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?

I can play the violin, guitar and can sing. I speak German. Granted I can’t do any of these very well, but they are little hidden factoids.

If you were not in the event industry, what would be your dream job? I have a list of dream jobs – really I do.  I made it a few years ago sort of like a bucket list.  In my dream world, I’d do each of these jobs for 1 – 2 years before I died.  Just long enough to get some skills to be dangerous!  These include, but are not limited to, (a) professional dancer (you look cool and get to stay fit at work which is like my dream after sitting at desks for a lot of the last 10 years), (b) educator (I just love teaching and sharing and leaving people with a great experience), (c) chef/baker (I love food and wish I knew more about food chemistry), (d) professional musician (because I have always loved music, but have rarely had the time to explore it as much as I’d like) and (e) marketing goddess (because I am a true brand ambassador at heart, a sponge for knowledge and a perpetual learner of all things and marketing allows you to test your knowledge daily for the benefit of the people).

Meet Heather Brogden!

What is your title and position at your current company?
I am the sole proprietor of Unique Heart Productions.

What does your company do? How is it different than others like it?
Unique Heart Productions offers both social and corporate photography and videography that has a focus on story-telling with strong aesthetics.

How many years have you been in the industry? Three
What was your very first job?Technically, my first job was when I was 12. I dusted grandfather clocks at my parents shop. My first real job though was advertising sales at a newspaper.

What lead you in into the event industry?
I studied photojournalism in college and wanted a way to maintain that passion but combine it with my own business.

Why did you decide to join ISES?
One of my favorite things about the business world is creating and sustaining relationships with the people I work with. I joined ISES to continue to build great friendships and work with talented people.

What are you looking to gain out of our ISES membership and how can we help you achieve that?
I am really excited about all of the educational opportunities. I really want to hone in and focus on perfecting my craft and look forward to ISES being a part of that.

What is your most memorable event? Why?
The 3rd wedding I ever shot was a destination wedding in Plymouth, MA. My mom went with me and I had such a great time it was weird that I could pursue this as a career. There was a lot of hard work after that to actually make it happen but that experience was the tipping point for me.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Not sure if that exists, as I tend to talk a lot! I am a huge outdoor person. I was even on the IU bass fishing team for a semester in college.

If you were not in the event industry, what would be your dream job?
A surf stand attendant where Matthew McConaughey is the instructor.
